Switzerland’s mixed doubles pair, Jenny Perret and Martin Rios, have won the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2017 (WMDCC) at the ATB Centre, in Lethbridge, Canada. Switzerland who went undefeated throughout the championship, beat Canada’s Joanne Courtney and Reid Carruthers, 6-5, in a dramatic final that came down to the very last stone.

It took all the way to an extra end and a last-stone draw to the button, but Sweden’s Mats Wranaa beat Canada by 5-4 to retain his world senior crown and take gold in Saturday (29 April) afternoon’s gold medal final in the World Seniors Curling Championships 2017, being held in Lethbridge, Canada’s ATB Centre, Lethbridge Curling Club..

Canada, China, Finland, Norway, Russia, Switzerland, and USA have qualified their National Olympic Committees (NOCs) for the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games mixed doubles curling event. This is guaranteed at the conclusion of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2017 semi-finals and after 5-8 and 11-12 classification games.

The gold medal final at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2017, being played at the ATB Centre in Lethbridge, Canada, is set with Switzerland taking on hosts Canada. The berths for the Olympic Winter Games have also been determined after this session with Switzerland and Norway claiming the final spots for their Member Associations.

Canada completed an undefeated week when they beat Switzerland by 10-5 in Saturday (29 April) morning’s gold medal final in the World Seniors Curling Championships 2017, being held in Lethbridge, Canada’s ATB Centre, Lethbridge Curling Club. At the same time Scotland took bronze medals with an 8-5 win over USA.

The curling spotlight is now shining a light on a new discipline of the game – mixed doubles. The game which features teams made up of one male and one female competitor, along with unique rules from the typical four-man team is making its debut in the upcoming 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, Republic of Korea (8-25 February 2018).

The 2018 editions of the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship (WMDCC) and the World Senior Curling Championships (WSCC) will be held in Oestersund Sweden, between 21-28 April 2018. The mixed doubles and seniors will both be held in the Östersund Arena. The Östersund Arena was opened in December 2013. It hosts two large halls usually used for ice-hockey and figure skating.

The World Curling Federation (WCF) will induct its first full curling team to the World Curling Hall of Fame on Saturday (29 April). The recipients of this honour will be 1959, 1960 and 1962 Scotch Cup winners, Team Richardson of Regina, Canada.

What is Mixed Doubles curling? Mixed doubles is a dynamic form of curling, where it is all about stone positioning, a lot of play to the four foot circle and a lot about angles. It is a faster version of curling that only requires two players on each team. Mixed Doubles Curling will make its debut on the Olympic Winter Programme at the games in Pyeongchang, South Korea 2018.
