Canada stands alone at the top of the rankings on three wins and no losses after five sessions of round-robin play at the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship 2012 in Lethbridge, Canada, following their last-end steal of one point for a 6-5 win over Switzerland on Sunday evening.

After four sessions of round-robin play at the Ford World Women’s Championship, three teams share the top spot on two wins and no losses – Canada, Germany and Switzerland. To reach this point, the new-look German team skipped by Melanie Robillard beat Scotland’s Eve Muirhead by 7-6 after an extra end in their second game on Sunday morning.

After the first day of round-robin play at the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship 2012, the Czech Republic top the rankings with two wins and no losses. Canada, Germany, Scotland and Switzerland also were unbeaten at the end of day one, but they have only played once, while, because of the way that the draw has worked out, only Italy are on two losses.

The Ford World Women’s Curling Championship 2012, presented by Richardson, begins in Canada on Saturday March 17 and runs until Sunday March 25. Twelve of the top women’s curling teams in the world will compete at the event which is being staged at the recently-upgraded Enmax Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Jocelyn Peterman skip of the Canadian junior women’s team and Sander Rølvåg lead on the Norwegian junior men’s team have won the 2012 World Curling Federation World Junior Sportsmanship Awards. Peterman and Rølvåg were selected for the award by fellow players at this year’s World Junior Curling Championships in Östersund, Sweden.

After leading the pack all the way through the week, Canada’s junior men’s team took the 2012 world junior title with an almost faultless performance in the final, beating Sweden by 10-4, effectively in seven ends, although with the result beyond doubt, the teams threw stones through in the eighth to complete the necessary number of ends.

It took all the way to an extra end of a tense final, but Scotland eventually successfully defended the women’s World junior title on Sunday morning, beating the Czech Republic by 6-5 to take gold. Beside them, Russia ran Sweden out of stones in the tenth end, to win their game by 7-4 and take bronze for the second year in succession.

Oxana Slesarenko, member of Russia’s Wheelchair Curling team, which won gold at the 2012 World Championships in Korea, has been voted the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athlete of the Month for February after leading her squad to the 2012 World Championship title in Chuncheon, Korea.

Russia won the gold medal at the World Curling Wheelchair Championship 2012 in Chuncheon, South Korea on Saturday defeating hosts Korea 9-1 in the final. The Koreans took the silver medal. China won the bronze medal, winning their game against Slovakia 7-4.
