At least one athlete from the 16-curling nations involved at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, will be represented in the Mixed Doubles event tomorrow (Saturday 20 February) as the last 16 teams compete for medals.
A total of 64 athletes in 32 teams played today (Friday 19 February), made up of one female and male athlete paired together from different nations. This unique competition, which will see National Olympic Committees sharing medals after the finals on Sunday 21 February at 13.00 (Central European Time), is a major part of the ‘Learn & Share’ ethos of the Youth Olympic Games.

From the Mixed team podium Gold medalists, from Canada, Tyler Tardi and Sterling Middleton have reached the second round. For USA, who were Silver medalists on Wednesday (17 February), Ben Richardson and Luc Violette are in the last-16 and Switzerland’s Bronze medalists Selina Whitschonke and Philipp Hoesli also recorded wins today to reach the next round.
Canada’s Tardi is paired with Japan’s lead Saski Honoka. They posted a 12-1 win over Great Britain’s Amy Bryce and Czech Republic’s Martin Blahovec. Middleton played in the last session today with New Zealand third Holly Thompson, and the pair beat Great Britain’s Mili Smith and Korea’s Yun Jeong Hong, 8-2.
USA skip Violette, is paired with Estonia’s lead Britta Sillaots. They were victorious over Sweden’s Tova Petterson and Italy’s Alberto Zisa, 7-4, tonight.
There was a historic victory for Brazil/USA pair Giovanna Barros [Brazil third] and Richardson [USA second] who beat Sweden’s lead Jenny Jonasson and China’s skip Hongrui Du, 8-4. This victory made Barros the first Brazilian curler to win a game at an Olympics, with this being the nations first Games.
Switzerland’s Witschonke who is teamed with Estonia’s second Jarl Gustsin, beat Italy’s Martina Ghezze and Norway’s Michael Mellemseter, 9-3, before Hoesli who is in a pair with Japan’s third Yako Matsuzawa defeated Norway’s Eline Mjoen and Czech Republic’s Pavel Mares, 9-6.
Hosts, Norway have two representatives in the last-16, skip Maia Ramsfjell and second Andreas Haarstad. Ramsfjell, paired with Korea’s second Hogeon Kim beat New Zealand/Switzerland pair Courtney Smith and Henwy Lochmann, 10-4. Haarstad is teamed up with China’s third Ruiyi Zhao and they beat Switzerland/Brazil pair, Laura Engler and Victor Cesar Da Cunha Santos, 9-1 this evening.
