Glasgow, Scotland

The City of Glasgow in Scotland has now launched a campaign to recruit volunteers for the next three major sporting events to be hosted there – including the LGT World Men’s Curling Championship 2020, which will be staged in the iconic Emirates Arena between 28 March and 5 April next year.
Glasgow has a track record second to none as a sporting city, with memorable events such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games taking place there, as well as the inaugural and successful multi-sport European Championships last year. It is also known as one of the friendliest cities in the world. The thousands of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers who have brought the city and the sporting events hosted there to life have been crucial in building the city’s sports and hospitality reputation.
These include people like Sandra Wilson, who said, “We [husband Bobby and I] volunteer to give something back. We are very passionate Glaswegians, so, we want to see people coming to our city really enjoying themselves. At the big events where there are lots of visitors, we work hard to make sure those visitors have everything they need to get the most out of the city.”
And like many of the local volunteers, keen and eager to be involved, Sandra added, “We don’t know a lot about curling, we’ve watched a lot on the TV, but our volunteering roles don’t involve what we know about the sport. It’s about giving something back and making sure every individual, arriving at the curling, for example, enjoys the city.”
Katie McKenzie, another experienced Glasgow volunteer, shares a lack of curling knowledge with Sandra and Bobby, despite that, like them, she is eager to be involved. She said, “I don’t know much about curling, but I’d love to learn, it’s a very interesting sport. I definitely would start watching it. It looks good fun and a great sport to get involved with."
